Award of the Silver Star- by direction of the President, under the provisions of the Act of congress approved 9 July 1918 and Pursuant to authority, the Silver Star for gallantry in action is awarded to the following named:

Corporal HERBERT G. PENNEY, Army Medical Service, United States Army. Corporal PENNEY
a member of Medical Company, 27th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, is cited for gallantry
in action against the armed enemy near Taesong-ni, Korea on the 25and 26 September 1950.
At 0600 hours on 25 September, Company, K, 27th Infantry was attacked by numerically superior
enemy forces and the ensuing battle lasted for two days.  During this period company K was forced
to withdraw from its position.  Corporal PENNEY, a medical aid man attached to the company,
knowing that there were wounded men lying in front of the positions who could not withdraw due to
their injuries, refused to withdraw with the rest of the unit.  Under heavy enemy automatice and small-arms
fire, he crawled across open rice paddies until he had located ten of the wounded men.  Still under heavy
enemy fire, he administered first aid and then started to evacuate them.  He carried all the ounded to safety,
making a total of ten trips, crawling or running across the fire-swept terrain.  Corporal PENNEY then
organized a group of South Koreans as a carrying party to carry the wounded and led them through
enemy infested territory for twelve hours before reaching the aid station.  After insuring that his patients
were in safe hands, he immediately returned to Company K's position where his services were sorely needed.
Upon reaching the position, he collapsed from fatigue, but after a short rest, returned to his medical duties.
The courageous actions and selfless devotion to duty of Corporal PENNEY reflect great credit on himself
and the military service.. Entered the federal service from Oklahoma.

Wounded Oct. 16, 1950, received the Purple heart Nov. 6, 1950.

Corporal HERBERT G. PENNEY was my father. He died in Arizona Oct. 29, 2004.
