MICHAEL E. "MIKEY" DINGWELL

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I served with the 3rd Brigade of the 25th Infantry Division as a combat engineer. I worked with the 1st of the 14th, 2nd of the 14th, 2nd of the 35th, 11th armored cav as well as some units I don't remember. I was a demo-man, tunnel rat, lz-cutter and various other things.
I served in the Central Highlands around Pleiku, Bong Son, An Khe, and was wounded up by Duc Pho.

In 1966 we didn't have trained tunnel rats yet, so they sent the 'pick and shovels' down. Out of 35 guys from Europe, I was the only one to come back. My best friend was killed six days before I was hit by a 57mm recoiless rifle while riding on the back of an APC.

I spent 27 years using drugs and booze to try to forget. I CAN'T FORGET!

I now work for Astro-Geology under NASA up in beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona. I play softball, fish, and take time to play with my three Yorkshire Terriers; and, of course, my wife.

It is now my desire to find the final resting place of my partner, Bill June, and go and say a final goodbye. My heart and my soul will forever grieve for him.

Mikey D.
This is a little background on Mike Dingwell who's poetry he has allowed me to use on my Vietnam pages. My thanks and love go out to him.
I work the midnight shift and my mind returns to
Vietnam most every night. The songs and pictures,
beautiful pages have helped me to remember. grieve and heal...
Thank You!

Bodies Of 16 U.S. Troops Recovered From Downed Chopper

POSTED: 7:52 am EDT June 30, 2005
UPDATED: 2:51 pm EDT June 30, 2005

KABUL, Afghanistan -- Slowed down by heavy rains in rugged terrain, rescuers have reached the wreckage of a U.S.
Chinook helicopter that crashed into a mountain ravine in AfghanistanTuesday.

The Pentagon now confirms that 16 U.S. troops died in the crash.

Officials had earlier said 17 were on board. But they now say the bodies of all 16 troops on the chopper have been recovered.

The announcement came at the Pentagon from Lt. Gen. James Conway, director of operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The chopper crashed into a mountain ravine on Tuesday, apparently after being hit by rebel fire.
Identities of the victims won't be released until family members are notified.

Earlier, a U.S. spokesman had acknowledged that the search and recovery team was "more into the
recovery stage," and having to deal with enemy fighters still in the area while it investigated the crash.
Militants are believed to have shot down the chopper as it brought in reinforcements for a battle with suspected al-Qaida fighters.

The Taliban has claimed it shot the chopper down.

We seem to keep forgetting that we still have soldiers fighting and dying in Afghanistan. My prayers and
thoughts go out to the families of these 16 soldiers.. Take time out of your busy day and your busy up
coming holiday week-end to remember our fighting men and women all across the world, and to say
a prayer for them and for their families and for the families of all the fallen soldiers in the battles
raging today.. Let us not let Iraq and Afghanistan become another Vietnam, with our soldiers shunned and forgotten
because we may not agree with the war over there.. They deserve our prayers and our respect.
Thanks to all of them..
