| Memorial Day Memories
Well, I was in the park that day When the wall was on display And many men with tear filled eyes Had looked, then turned away They stood there, looking at that wall And tears flowed from their eyes For they just finished reading Their buddies names inscribed I watched them run their fingers Across the polished stone To trace the names of hero's Who were never coming home. Some of them wore purple hearts While some had just one arm And most of them were wounded To save this land from harm For it was a proud reunion On a gray Memorial Day When all the vets from Vietnam Had gathered , just to pray Lee Greenwood, sang their theme song And they all sang it too God Bless The U S A , they cried They're voices loud and true And some of them were standing In wheelchairs others sat And others wandered aimlessly And wondered who was that Some were dressed in uniform Others were in rags Some drank strong black coffee Others from brown bags But oh, their pride was evident And everybody knew If they had to do it over They'd do it just for you And when it was all over I turned and walked away Knowing I'd remember them On each Memorial Day So every year that followed Out here in my front yard I proudly raise Old Glory While my tears are flowing hard. For I think of all who fought and died Who gave their very best Not all of them wore medals Pinned in clusters on their chest No, they were just Americans Who died to keep us free Simple men and scholars The same as you and me So we can sleep in peaceful sleep In our own beds at night There's always a proud soldier Ready, trained to fight So, to all of you who've ever served And to the others who still do I raise my hand in proud salute And say a proud Thank You ! |
