What To Do With Found Dogtags

After a number of cable TV news stories about lost dogtags found around the world were aired recently, dogtags are now suddenly being 'found' in uncountable numbers... the majority of these 'found' dogtags are bogus, having been recently 'manufactured' and aged by complex antiquing to appear a generation or more old.

Virtually everyone who "finds" dogtags expresses a personal desire to return them either to the veteran or his/her family. Some 'finders' hope for a reward. Others desire publicity. While others are hoping for something of benefit other than money. In most cases the 'finders' will hold the dogtags 'hostage' until/unless they can personally contact the veteran or his/her family. Here is how you can help stop the current dogtag scam...

American veterans and veterans organizations can end the 'found dogtag' scam by responding to all reports, whether genuine or not, with the following message::

"Officially, lost dogtags are the Property of the US
Government. Lost dogtags are not the Property of the veteran
who wore them, nor are they the property of the veteran's
family. Found dogtags should be mailed to the Department of
Defense or the local U.S. Embassy."

Or, you can direct dogtag 'finders' to this website: http://members.aol.com/veterans/dogtag.htm

My Dearest New Friend - Thank-you for your offer to help us find some of those who
served with my beloved husband during the Viet Nam war.  We will be grateful for
anything you can do to help us in this endeavor.  Please feel free to have those
who may remember my husband to contact you or me.  The struggle goes on for
all who survived and for those of us who respect them and love them so dearly.
My husbands name is Allen A. Slade, he was a sergeant with the 82nd and 101st
Airborne/Infantry and he served in 1967/68.  Again, thank-you for caring as much as
we do and for giving us the opportunity to say thank-you for all military vets who have
given so much for all of us, you are providing a candle of hope within your tribute
and that is a precious gift.

hi jackie.........thank you for the veterans day thought's.

i alway's have a tough time on memorial day and veteran's day. my mind alway's goes back in time to places far away.i think of the friends i had, those who made it back and those who did not. my gosh.......that was such a time in our lives. we fought for ourselves and each other. we shared everything with each other. our food, our water, our ammo, our mail.......everything. we were just kid's but we were men. our eye's and hearts saw and felt such saddness and feelings which i never knew existed. such a long time ago....but yet.......alway's there.

thank you once again, jackie. i alway's look for new additions to your web-site. you alway's make my day. thanks.
