NOBODY KNOWS

Nobody knows the cost an individual pays
when serving their country,
only the person who is actually paying the price.
Nobody truly knows the pain suffered
or all that must be endured,
the long time plans willingly postponed,
and of loved ones left behind.
Nobody knows the atrocities their eyes have witnessed,
nor the cries heard from a buddy who has been gravely wounded.

Nobody knows the lonely nights,
the fearful heart or tears shed alone.
Nobody knows of the nightmares that are dreamed repeatedly,
or the day's horrors that far surpass the nightmares.
Nobody knows the depth or breadth of each sacrifice made.
Nobody knows of the countless heroic incidents which took place,
nor the bruises hidden, callouses earned, precious blood spilled.

Nobody knows of the dreams set aside, the yearnings to be held,
or how many times a loved ones picture is pulled from a breast pocket.
Nobody knows the challenges that were faced,
the fears that were conquered, the prayers said for others.
Nobody knows the demands that were met, expectations realized,
the heart's pride or a life put on the line, when asked.

Nobody knows the enormous difference just "one" person made,
in the pursuit of freedom, peace and safety to millions
who were unknown.
Nobody can fathom the physical and emotional price paid,
only the one who gave all that he or she could give ...
without fanfare, often without recognition,
without expectation to receive back
all that had selflessly been given.

Nobody knows but God, and for the soldier this is enough.
Somewhere in the heart a righteous decision had been made,
when he or she chose to serve our beloved country
and those that they love.
They pledged an oath before God and man,
and became our trusted guardians of liberty, peace and safety.
Willing to sign this oath in blood, if need be,
and pay the ultimate price.
Bill was with Steve, my cousin the night he died..  8-17-1967, in Vietnam.. Thank you Bill for sharing the story with me.. Bill is still alive and lives here in Wyoming..He was one of the lucky ones that made it home.

Where Have All The Flowers Gone
Steve died in my arms that night calling for his mother. I will never forget him for I have all ways carried him in my heart and mind.
